Saar Deer Plate

First off, I know this is probably not everyone’s cup of tea. This is an ultra-modern decorative plate I found about a year ago at the thrift store. At first, I thought it might be some sort of Glidden item. But the bottom was glazed which is usually not the case for the square plates from Glidden that I’m thinking of. In addition, there was that mark of “Saar” on the back. For awhile, I thought it might be an unknown but it turns out it’s from Richard Saar of Saar Ceramics. He actually produced dinnerware in the 1950s with a similar feel to this particular plate, although this one is pretty interesting because it has the circular blobs of lava glaze applied directly to the surface.
In any case, I’ve sort of grown to like it and have been keeping an eye out for more items by him. I know he had one line that was more popular on the East coast called “Etruscan” which I see come up for auction from time to time.
