Roselane “Customized” Dove

Continuing with our Monterey trip roundup, we spotted this Roselane dove at an antique mall in Los Alamos, CA, and had to take a picture. If you’ll recall we showed our four Roselane doves earlier and commented on how they often used the same mold but changed the look with different colors, handpainting, and added body decorations.
I’ve seen this base color on the dove before. It’s sort of an avocado yellow glaze. But I hadn’t seen it with the squiggly line glaze decorations in mauve and brown before. An interesting look - I’m not 100% sure if the decoration wasn’t done later on, or even by Roselane versus a third party. That kind of later modification was pretty common with California potteries.
The base of this one was marked Roselane. Our other ones are hit and miss with being marked, but once you see one of them, you probably won’t forget the shape.

I recently found a pair of white ceramic oriental dancers that were marked June 7/59 … California Ceramics … 402. A friend had a book on California Pottery and in flipping through, I discovered that these figures were identical to those shown in the book under Roselane Pottery and are called “Bali Dancers”. Do you know if these figures were/are available at the local Paint-Your-Own ceramics shop? The “June 7/59″ is scratched into the underside of the base and the “402″ and “California Ceramics” look to be stamped. We love these figurines! Thank you.
