Kneeling Deer Figurine
I’m wondering if someone might be able to tell me if this little kneeling deer figurine I found the other day is from a California pottery. My first instinct was Rio Hondo, but since I’m not familiar with animal figurines as much, I really can’t be sure. The handpainted facial expression with the closed eyelids with long lashes sure reminds me of some of the Rio Hondo stuff I’ve seen. But I haven’t been able to find this exact deer yet.
I think there’s a possibility it might be from Japan - I know there were a lot of companies making reproductions of this kind of figurine. The overall weight of the piece is also very light, though I know there were many Calif companies that used lighter clays too. The bottom is not marked at all, and unglazed. You can see a pic on the unknowns page (A0022).

I’m also curious about this figurine. I’m thinking it is a llama and not a deer. I have one that is 3 3/4 inches high, and a local antique store is holding one for me until tomorrow that is over 4″. I have an extensive collection of Rio Hondo, and this one is new to me ~ however, I have been happily surprised with some of my finds. Also, the one I have is heavier than you describe, and there is no hole in the bottom. Personally, I don’t think it is from Japan. If you ever find out if is definitely Rio, please let me know. I’m only getting the bigger one so it will be a “set”. Where are you located?

Hi Jeanine - thanks for the comment. That’s interesting what you said about it being a llama. I originally thought it didn’t look as “deer-like” as some of the others, but I thought maybe it was just me. We’re located in Southern California.

Hi,
I also collect Rio Hondo and would like to talk with other collectors. I think this might be Walker Pottery, but am not sure. I am located in Central California.
