Harrison McIntosh Exhibit / 95th Birthday
To be honest, I’ve been rather eagerly awaiting the Harrison McIntosh: A Timeless Legacy exhibit that will be opening up at AMOCA (The American Museum of Ceramic Art) next month. The main reason is that I only recently became aware of his work as one of the premier midcentury modern California studio potters in the country. Because of that, I never really paid attention at the museums I’ve been to that showcase his work. And because his pottery is increasingly out of my price range, I haven’t gotten a chance to collect any of it.
They are actually hosting a grand opening on September 12 in combination with Mr. McIntosh’s 95th birthday. I won’t be able to attend that, but if you happen to be in the area and are a fan of his work, you can pony up the $100 for a ticket to the exclusive dining event which will take place at the home of AMOCA founders David and Julie Armstrong in Claremont.
McIntosh studied under studio potter luminaryGlen Lukens and later taught along with Peter Voulkos at Otis Art Institute. He mostly focused on studio pottery, but did do some design for larger companies, like Metlox and Mikasa, where his work was mass produced.
