Grand Mug, Perhaps Brock?

Large Grand Mug - Potteries of California

I’ve had this pottery mug for awhile now. I originally got it thinking that it belonged to B.J. Brock & Co’s “Desert Mist” line. It certainly has the same characteristics with a solid chartreuse color with a hint of brown drip glaze at the top of the item. It’s rather big at 4 inches tall and nearly 4 inches wide.

I think on one dinnerware website they listed a “Grand Mug” in the Desert Mist line, but did not have a picture. So I wasn’t able to confirm this one as definitely being from Brock. I’ve left it in the Unknowns gallery for now. There were quite a few other California companies who had similar looking lines, so I’m still unsure about it’s lineage.

  1. Scott Lindberg Says:

The glaze looks close, but the weight of the pottery body seems so much heavier than the rest of the “Desert Mist” line. I can’t say for certain if it is or isn’t Brock since I’ve never seen this shape before, but it seems a little out of place if it is.

I agree, the weight threw me off too. I actually wouldn’t have considered it was Brock, except that I know they listed a “grand mug” shape on replacements, so I thought that fit the description. But it could possibly not even be a Calif. company at all.
