Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman Exhibition
I just wanted to get the word out that the Mingei International Museum is opening an exhibit featuring the work of Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman starting tomorrow Sunday March 29, 2009. Thanks to Cathy of California for posting about this great news. They have previously had exhibitions on their work, but I’ve missed them. I was thinking I might have to miss this one too, but luckily for me this is going to be a long-running exhibit that will last until January 10, 2010!
We don’t have an info page up on the Ackermans yet, although I love the California pottery creations that they produced. Their company was known as Jenev Design Studio and operated out of Culver City in the 1950s until I believe the 1970s. They didn’t focus solely on ceramics, however, and are often recognized for their mosaics and textiles. The exhibition is called Masters of Mid-Century California Modernism — Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman and will feature over 200 different pieces of theirs.
I’m pretty excited about checking out the exhibition, so we’ll have to schedule a trip down to Balboa Park in San Diego soon. The Ackerman’s were at the forefront of the movement now referred to as California Mid-Century Modern. For more information, you can check out the exhibition page and there have been several articles written about them in the LA Times, here are a few: Article 1, Article 2, Article 3.
