Brock Manzanita Bowls

Sorry, I’m very behind on posting California Pottery finds - it just takes so long to photograph, write up the galleries, and everything to the image and text marks database, and then connect it all together. This is a really nice find from last summer, a pair of Brock Manzanita bowls. Unfortunately, there were six bowls but I didn’t buy all of them at the thrift at the time, since I didn’t know that it was harder to come across. They’re long gone now - but at least I have these examples.
It’s sort of neat, when the bowl is turned upside-down, the metallic dead tree almost looks like lightning coming down from the sky. The sprayed gray accent glaze on the bowls sort of reminds me of some of the Heath pieces.
I see a lot of B.J. Brock & Co dinnerware items at flea markets - even when they aren’t banged up, the provincial lines they made don’t appeal to me as much. But Manzanita is a more unusual and modern looking shape that they put out close to when the company folded in the late 50s. It’s definitely not as common as Brock’s other lines, but hopefully I’ll get lucky again and score a few more pieces.
