A Visit to Heath Ceramics, Los Angeles
Earlier, I posted about the new Heath Ceramics outlet store that was coming in December to Los Angeles. We actually were able to attend the opening weekend of the show, but I only got a chance to make a write-up now. The store itself was wonderful, with tons of Heath items in bright and subdued colors being illuminated by large windows all around the shop (the space was created by the design firm Commune).
Adam Silverman, who runs Atwater Pottery and was the major factor in Heath opening a second store in Los Angeles, was on hand as well showing some of his wonderful ceramics. He’ll be the studio director at the new Heath facility, and will coordinate a guest artist program and oversee the gallery.
The store sells both new items as well as “factory seconds” which are pieces that are slightly blemished or just not perfect. You can pick up these seconds at a pretty good discount - the only thing is that they don’t always have the items you might want because they sell out.

We seriously had a hard time not going over our limit - luckily we had a mission, which was to purchase holiday gifts for friends. But we’ll definitely be revisiting again, maybe to pick up something for ourselves. Some of our favorites include the teapots, the low handled mugs and the bud vases.

On a separate note, but still very timely, KCRW’s DNA (Design and Architecture) did a short piece today on Heath Pottery as part of a show called “Back To The Handmade”. It’s available in their archives if you’d like to listen to the interview with Catherine Bailey.

when I put in heath bread plates, opal blue, coupe, your ad came up, but I don’t see it on your site. Do you have them for sale? I am looking for 3 of them, and 4 salad plates, 2 custard cups, 2 dinner plates, at least. Do you have any of these? Thank you

Hi, I don’t personally sell any California pottery right now. We only run this blog/reference. Anyhow, I don’t know if Opal Blue is a current Heath production. Funny though, I recently did come across a few bowls that I believe to be that pattern at the thrift - but we’re actually using them.
But I would check on the official Heath Ceramics website for more information. They are rather nice and often answer questions. If they don’t currently make that pattern, then your best bet is to put a watch on Heath on Ebay or other auction sites.
