Calpotter Vase - Potteries of California

The most interesting thing for me about the Calpotter company is it’s similarity to the domain name for Potteries of California! This was a Laguna Beach area pottery which operated in the 1940s-50s. The big name in the area, of course, was Brayton Laguna. That company’s success inspired a whole wave of different ceramics businesses in the area.

Most of the items I see from this company are similar to the one I found above - handpainted and rather roughly formed in shape, and festooned with different colors and gold paint. I have to admit that both the method of decoration and design shape isn’t my favorite type of California pottery. It’s just very busy-looking. The “grape” motif seems to be one of their more common designs. Also, note how the small vase is not completely symmetrical. I think this was done purposely, but I’m still not sure - other items I’ve seen from them are not as rough looking.

We’ve seen mostly dinnerware and decorative things like vases from the company. They also made souvenir-type items like ashtrays. It seems like their items are more uncommon than some of the other potteries, but that could also be that there isn’t a whole lot of name recognition for Calpotter. However, most of the items I’ve seen are inkstamped on the bottom with the company’s name and “Laguna Beach California”. This should make them fairly easy to recognize.
